Surviving The Holiday Excess and Decadence

I often wish I could spread out over the year all the fun parties, family gatherings and all the excessive eating and imbibing that goes along with it during the Christmas season. But since that never happens, I have learned some tricks and tools to help my body cope with over-eating and drinking over the holiday season. Here are my top 5 tips for surviving the holiday excess and decadence. Have a healthy and happy holiday season!

1. Lemon Tonic

Every morning I enjoy a warm cup of lemon water before I put anything else in my body. Warm water helps relax the intestines to encourage that morning “movement” and lemon is alkaline in the body so it is a great balancer. It also aids the liver in gently flushing out toxins (like alcohol).

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Tonic

Mix 8 oz warm water to 1 TBSP unpasteurized ACV and 1/16th tsp (a pinch) of honey. This tonic also creates an alkaline condition in the body, promotes friendly bacteria which aids in digestion and relieves the feeling of indigestion and feeling over-full. For Heartburn or Headache mix in a shot glass: 1TBSP water with 1 tsp ACV. Hold in mouth for 30 seconds and then swallow. Wait 30 minutes and repeat if needed.

3. Probiotic

Boost your good bacteria with a daily intake of a good probiotic. It is best to take a probiotic on an empty stomach so first thing in the morning or before bed (or both). My favourite is Vitadophilus by Sunrider International. This probiotic is specially formulated with apple pectin and then specially packaged so it does not need to be refrigerated and the apple pectin helps it pass through the stomach acids so it gets into the small intestine where acidophilus grows. It tastes delicious (like apples) so it is easy for anyone (including children) to ingest and because it does not need to be refrigerated it is easy to have on hand while traveling over the holidays or just a night out.

4. Digestive Enzyme

A full spectrum digestive enzyme to help digest all your Macro-Nutrients (Protein, Carbohydrate, and Fat) is very helpful when you know you will be having a large, multi-dish meal. Take 2-3 capsules 20-30 minutes before a meal. For really large meals you can also take a couple more halfway through the meal. I like Udo’s Choice Ultimate Digestive Enzyme by Flora. They are Vegan, Gluten Free, and Dairy Free.

5. Electrolytes

These are extremely helpful for hangovers. For a healthier version of a Gatorade, I love drinking Fortune Delight from Sunrider International. It comes in five delicious flavours, zero sugar or artificial flavours/sweeteners, tastes like iced tea but is made from fruits and Chinese herbs, high in antioxidants and phytonutrients and regenerates the liver. For an extra boost, you can also add Electrosport from Sunrider to the Fortune Delight. It contains 10 important minerals and no sugar or preservatives.
