Striving to Live Better With Less

“Living better is not defined by what we own, but is defined by our experiences, interactions, and memories”

Somewhere along the line, I got stuck in the mindset that living better equated to living with more. In recent months my boyfriend has provided me with a huge reality check, mainly because he is about to move in with me. We had to have the ‘space’ discussion…. as in, you may be used to having an entire household to yourself, but now need to ensure he has adequate shared living space. Goodbye to the extra bedrooms turned into a clothing closet and makeup room for me, and hello man cave for him. P.S he loves me enough to understand that one of the rooms I still need as my own personal oasis.

Our conversation did make me take a serious look at my overall living habits. I began to run through the items that were currently in my house, making notes of what was being used regularly and what was not. It prompted a major realization; I needed to break-free of many material items and start making positive household changes. Of course, doing a complete 180 and becoming a minimalist was out of the question…clearly, I am a maximalist at heart.

The best way to start the process of making my household leaner was to adapt the mindset that less is more and become conscious of my existing living habits. The process of the household detox has begun and I have started using these simple objectives to keep me on track.

Lean Household Objectives:

1. Less is More

2. Focus on Memories, Not Materials

3. Save Money For Traveling or Large Renovations

4. Purge Unnecessary Household Items…Donate or Giveaway

5. Be Mindful of New Items You Bring Into Your Living Space

6. Fall In Love With Your Interior Living Space by making it an Oasis

7. Make Sure To Truly Experience Life, not just Watch It Pass By

For me striving to live better with less will be a work in progress, but my living space has become lighter and my old habits are slowly fading away leaving me feeling lighter and happier.
